Desta Therapy was born from a story of compassion, community, and a deep belief in the power of human connection.

Founders Jimmy and Rachel Gross began their journey in nonprofit service, launching a grassroots organization called No Ordinary Love to serve vulnerable communities in Ethiopia. Their work centered on hands-on outreach, partnering with local organizations and government offices to support families in crisis and respond to physical, mental, and emotional needs. Their transition house became primarily dedicated to the rehabilitation and reunification of trafficked children, shaping a mission rooted in hope, healing, and whole-person care.

Through this experience, they recognized a deeper need — people didn’t just need resources; they needed safe spaces to process trauma, navigate life transitions, strengthen relationships, and heal emotionally. After returning to the United States, they saw the importance of building a sustainable clinical practice that could provide ongoing, professional therapeutic care. From that realization, Desta Therapy was formed.

“Desta,” meaning joy in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, reflects the heart behind the work: helping individuals, couples, and families rediscover joy and experience emotional wellness. Alongside the practice, Jimmy and Rachel rebranded No Ordinary Love and launched Desta Provisions to help sustain and extend the therapeutic mission of Desta Therapy.

What began as nonprofit outreach in Ethiopia has evolved into a holistic model of therapy and community support. Today, Desta Therapy offers in-person and virtual services grounded in compassion, cultural awareness, and evidence-based care.

Desta Therapy stands as a reflection of that journey — born from service, shaped by experience, and sustained by a deep commitment to healing.

Jimmy and Rachel continue to lead with the belief that every person deserves to be seen, supported, and reminded that their story matters.
