The Gifts We Never Expected

Some of the gifts we remember most aren’t the ones we asked for...
In the mid-to-late 1980s, my dad surprised me with a Casio C-80 calculator watch. I hadn’t asked for it. It wasn’t my birthday or Christmas. He bought it for me because he had noticed me cleaning and rearranging my sister’s room for her without being asked.
I loved that watch, but decades later, I realize it wasn’t really the watch I remember most. It was being noticed.
My dad saw something I was doing simply because I cared, and he chose to acknowledge it. His gift quietly said, “I see you. I appreciate you. I’m proud of you.”
There is something powerful about being noticed, not for what we accomplish, but for the small things we do when no one is asking us to do them.
At Desta Therapy, we believe in the importance of noticing, too.
Sometimes people come to therapy feeling like no one sees the effort they're making. They may be doing their best to hold things together, care for others, start over, heal, or simply make it through another day.
And sometimes, healing begins with someone helping us notice what is already there: our strengths, our resilience, our capacity for change, and the small steps we’re taking that might otherwise go unnoticed.
That little black Casio watch has long since disappeared, but the feeling my dad gave me has stayed. Someone noticed. Someone cared.
Maybe that’s the real beauty of a “just because” gift.
And maybe, sometimes, one of the greatest gifts we can give another person is simply to notice them.
